  • Day 9: Visit textile center in Chinchero (B, L)

Today will be very special: we will drive to The Center for Traditional Textiles with Quechua master weaver, Nilda Callañaupa, who founded the Center in 1996. Fearing that the traditional skills, methods, and designs used in Andean weaving were in jeopardy of being lost forever as the older generation of weavers passed on, she embarked on a mission to preserve this art form. She knew that the art and skills in the purest forms of Peruvian Andean weaving were not being learned by younger generations, and she wanted to change that. Ms. Callañaupa founded the Center to encourage and stimulate the revitalization of the art of textile weaving and production of Andean textiles. In doing so, the Center provides weavers and their families with additional economic support. The weavers, mostly women, live in the town of Chinchero with their families, which is an additional incentive to learn and practice weaving. Most importantly, the preservation of this art is also critical to the preservation of the Andean culture as a whole.

We will spend the whole day at the center, having lunch there and allowing you to become fully immersed in the ancient techniques used to produce gorgeous Andean textiles.

After enjoying all these amazing cultural activities, we will return to Cusco city.
